Take to the Ice – Louisiana

While you can’t typically hit the slopes in Louisiana, you can hit the ice this holiday season. And you don’t have to look too far to find it! There are several great spots across Sportsman’s Paradise where you can bundle up and have some wintry fun!

Mark your calendars now and plan to attend the NOLA Christmas Fest slated for December 20 – 31 at the New Orleans Convention Center. This year’s event features ice skating, ice slides and carnival rides, along with an all new curling lane! If you didn’t get to watch curling in action during the Winter Olympics, this is your chance to try your hand at this interesting sport that dates all the way back to the early 1500s in Scotland where the game was played with primitive stones on frozen ponds. For more information, visit www.nolachristmasfest.com. Tickets are $20 for general admission and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com or at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center Ticketmaster Box Office.

If you are closer to the Capital City, check out Skating on the River sponsored by Cirque de Soleil CRYSTAL. This fun event begins on Friday, December 21 at the Raising Cane’s River Center in Baton Rouge, and the rink will remain open until year end. Each session features 90 minutes of ice time on the giant rink for just $12 – $14 per skater. Visit ticketmaster.com or call 225-389-3030 for details.

Or why not make a stop in Shreveport to skate George’s Pond located inside the Hirsch Coliseum? When the city’s hockey team, the Mudbugs, aren’t practicing, this rink is open to the public to try out (or show off) their ice-skating skills. Holiday skating started on December 1 and will continue through January 5. Check out @georgespond34 on Facebook for skating hours and ticket details.

Plus, there’s yet another ice-skating opportunity in downtown Ruston December 7 – 30 in the parking lot of the city’s Historic Fire Station. One-hour sessions are priced at just $10 per person. And while you’re there, you can even take care of any last-minute items on your gift list. Downtown Ruston has a wide variety of local boutiques and vendors, and many will be staying open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays from now until December 20. Visit rustonlincoln.com for a list of downtown shops and ice skating times.

Wherever you are in Louisiana this holiday season, an ice rink is just a short drive away! Grab your sweaters and get ready to make some memories on the ice!
