If you had asked Matthew Imes if he would ever attend an Academy Award’s event, his answer would have been a resounding “no”. Not that he wouldn’t like to go, but he never saw himself being invited to such an event. That all changed in early 2018.
A longtime Louisiana resident, Matthew’s family moved to Baton Rouge when he was three years old. He attended Broadmoor High School before going to Centenary College in Shreveport. Matthew graduated with honors receiving a BS in Business Administration before going to work in the insurance industry.
We asked Matthew how “What If?” came into being. In 2011, Matthew was a Senior Vice President for a national physical therapy network. He and one of his colleagues were on a business trip, and had plenty of windshield time. The colleague was going through a rough time in her life, and repeatedly asked Matthew questions that started with “What If…”. The idea behind “What If?” the novel was born that day.
In 2012, Matthew completed his first draft. This was prior to Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg announcing their efforts to integrate Artificial Intelligence with the human mind. Due to work obligations, Matthew set the book aside. In 2016, Matthew’s future agent, Lisa Darden, read the book and called him with her thoughts. She started by warning she would always be honest with her assessments. She then told him the book needed a LOT of work. What caught her attention though was the wonderful idea behind the book, and with hard work, she promised the book would become something special.
The collaboration resulted in the book being published in August 2017. Lisa urged Matthew to self-publish as artificial intelligence was becoming a hot topic, and she knew time was of the essence. Lisa was proven to be correct in her belief.
When asked to tell us about the book, Matthew replied, “Have you ever asked yourself, ‘What If?’ Everyone has at one time or another of course. Using the technology described in the book, people are now able to find answers to those questions.”
“What If?” is a novel about artificial intelligence integrating with the human mind. This integration allows users to go back in their minds to a previous event, change something, and then experience what would have happened had the user made a different choice. The main character, Ryan, uses this new technology to explore his past. Readers not only follow Ryan on that journey, they see how his present-day life is impacted by the technology.
In early 2018, the group that hosts the gifting suite at the Oscars called Lisa. She discussed the book with them, and they thought it would be a great idea for Matthew to come to Hollywood to give his book out. The event was a tremendous success with Matthew being able to meet with numerous actors/actresses, producers, screenwriters, and directors. There was tremendous interest in exploring opportunities for turning the book into a series or a movie.
